Large Grants

1. Role Modelling and Career Support

As part of the Youth Resilience Programme’s large grant activities, four organisations – Aswad Arts, Bradford Youth Activity Club, Citizen Science and Thornbury Community Development Service – are collaboratively delivering a year-long initiative titled “Role Modelling and Career Support.” These organisations, all deeply rooted in BD3 area, are providing targeted support to help young people build resilience, explore career opportunities, and develop essential life skills through a range of inspiring and engaging activities.

Aswad Arts

Aswad Arts uses music, creative arts, and mentoring to engage hard-to-reach young people—particularly those from Roma, Eastern European, and African backgrounds in BD3. Through weekly sessions at Karmand Community Centre, they have delivered a variety of activities including rap-writing, DJ skills, urban music creation, sports, aerobics, arts and crafts, and reflective rhyme writing. These sessions not only build technical and creative skills but also encourage teamwork, literacy, self- expression, and public speaking confidence. Aswad Arts addresses issues such as anti-social behaviour, peer pressure, and negative influences by promoting positive role models from the local community and facilitating guided discussions, storytelling, and career-focused mentoring. Led by experienced tutors with strong community trust, the programme connects participants to real-world career pathways in the creative industries and beyond, helping them build confidence, resilience, and aspirations for the future.

Bradford Youth Activity Club

Bradford Youth Activity Club offers regular activities and support for young people, with a focus on promoting well-being, aspirations, and community involvement. These activities include weekly girls-only swim sessions, quad biking, multisport, and arts and crafts. The club is also arranging a careers day in August, giving opportunities for young people to pursue jobs in sectors that interest them. BAYC also has connections with mental health counsellors and the police department to tackle antisocial behaviour and increase positive role modelling and wellbeing for youth people

Citizen Science

Citizen Science leads on the academic and educational development component of the “Role Modelling and Career Support” programme. Their flagship initiative, Better Education, Better Life, targets young people with limited academic support at home—particularly those from ethnic minority backgrounds or low-income families. The programme works with small groups of students, providing a structured series of six workshops for each group. These workshops are designed to help participants identify their career aspirations and explore the ethical considerations involved in different career paths. Each session is facilitated by a PhD student from an ethnic minority background, who serves as a relatable and inspiring role model, helping participants see themselves succeeding in academia and beyond.

Thornbury Community Development Service

TCDS has delivered a series of plumbing workshops as part of the “Role Modelling and Career Support” programme, creating a hands-on, skills-based experience for young people in the community. Held over weekends at Masjid Ibraheem and Education Centre, the sessions provided a welcoming and supportive space where both boys and girls could engage in something new and practical. Guided by experienced trainers, participants gradually built their confidence—moving from cautious tool handling to independently completing plumbing tasks like fitting pipework, testing water flow, and assembling basic fixtures. The workshops extended beyond the development of technical skills; they served as a space where young people felt a sense of accomplishment, received support, and took pride in their learning. This collective programme ensures that diverse young people across Barkerend and BD3 are supported year-round, through tailored activities that combine creativity, education, mentorship, and personal development. Together, these organisations are equipping the next generation with the tools they need to thrive.
